On Saturday, the United States and Israel launched significant military strikes against Iran, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This operation is seen as one of the most daring foreign-policy moves by U. S. President Donald Trump during his time in office. Although Trump campaigned on a platform aimed at peace and preferred diplomatic solutions to conflicts, he did not present a detailed justification to the public before this escalation, briefly referencing the situation in his State of the Union address and later in a video message.
One of the main goals articulated by Trump is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He has consistently stated that a nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable, claiming to have already compromised Iran’s nuclear program through previous military actions. In his recent remarks, he suggested that Iran was trying to revive its nuclear ambitions, which poses a threat to regional stability and global security.
The U. S. and Israel justified their prior airstrikes in June by claiming Iran was nearing the capability to produce nuclear weapons. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency and U. S. intelligence have concluded that Iran had ceased its nuclear weapons program in 2003, a claim that Iran disputes, insisting that its uranium enrichment efforts are intended for civilian use under international law.
Moreover, Trump has emphasized the need to address Iran’s missile development, which he described as a growing threat to the United States and its allies. He asserted that Iran is working on long-range missiles which could potentially reach Europe and even the U. S., although he offered no detailed evidence to support his comments on the missile capabilities.
The attacks were also framed as necessary for eliminating threats posed by Iran and its proxies against American interests and allies. Trump referenced past violent incidents, including Iran’s 1979 capture of the U. S. Embassy and attacks by Iranian-backed groups that resulted in American military casualties in the Middle East. He also mentioned Iran’s support for Hamas, which has conducted attacks against Israel.
Trump’s messages included claims regarding the treatment of protesters in Iran, alleging that thousands have been killed during recent unrest. While his figures could not be substantiated, human rights groups have reported thousands of fatalities. The Iranian government has also provided its own numbers, which differ from those presented by Trump.
In calling for regime change in Iran, Trump encouraged the Iranian people to rise against their government, declaring that they should seize their opportunity for freedom. He announced the news of Khamenei’s death while at his Mar-a-Lago resort, and this was later confirmed by Iranian media. The Israeli Prime Minister also indicated that Khamenei’s compound had been destroyed in the strikes. As the operations continue, Trump proclaimed that the military actions would persist until peace is achieved in the Middle East and beyond.
