Moroccan diplomacy: The Post-unipolar era of global change

Jamal Ladam

By 2026, the global system is undergoing critical changes, marked by political uncertainty, economic fears, and security concerns. The idea of a unipolar world, which seemed dominant before, is slowly declining, making way for a clearer picture of a multipolar order in which decision-making power is shared among both classical and new global players. Amid these unpredictable shifts, a major question arises: how much can Moroccan diplomacy adapt its strategy to life in this new world without upsetting the balance it has long maintained?

Over the past decade, Morocco has strengthened its position as a regional actor with a meaningful impact, thanks to its political stability and the legitimacy it has built through its institutions and religious authorities. Its presence across Africa has also grown significantly. The country has made remarkable progress in security, migration, and counter-terrorism. However, the current political and diplomatic framework requires shifting from simply managing relations to actively shaping and developing them in a pragmatic, realistic way.

Between continuity diplomacy and a pragmatic development approach

It is expected that Moroccan diplomacy will not adopt a radical change in its previous strategies but will instead seek to update its tools and realign its priorities to enhance its sovereignty. Although traditional partnerships with the European Union and the United States will remain the cornerstone, thanks to close economic, trade, and security ties, this will not prevent the Kingdom from diversifying its strategic relations. In this context, it will work to strengthen and consolidate its links with China, Russia, and the Gulf countries, with a particular focus on deepening its presence within the African continent.

In this context, what may be considered a double standard is, in essence, diplomatic diligence aimed at promoting opportunities for the renewal of international relations within a world system that no longer accepts strict stability in alignments. The world today recognizes countries that can manage their interests realistically and pragmatically, avoiding hollow ideological slogans or closed political alliances.

Economic diplomacy is the entrance to a new international position

Economic diplomacy is one of the most prominent tools the Kingdom relies on in the next phase to strengthen its international presence. Major projects in energy, green industries, and cross-border infrastructure are expanding Morocco’s role, especially in West Africa, the Sahel, and the Atlantic regions. In addition, the use of the Moroccan Sahara issue within the framework of bilateral partnerships remains a strategic option that contributes to strengthening international recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern regions, under the umbrella of the autonomy project as a realistic and sustainable solution.

On the other hand, there remain challenges and objective factors that cannot be ignored, such as the fragility of the international economy, the sensitivity of regional relations with certain neighboring countries, and the escalation of global competition within Africa. This requires that Moroccan diplomatic action remain calculated and balanced, protecting national interests first without engaging in uncertain geopolitical adventures.

Rational diplomacy is a thoughtful option for the kingdom

Moroccan diplomacy is built on a careful balance between moderate dialogue and a strong commitment to protecting the country’s core principles, especially sovereignty. Morocco aims to promote stability and harmony in its region, deliberately avoiding actions that could stir up tensions. At the same time, it refuses to accept a subordinate position or just fill the gap left by major global powers. This practical and balanced approach is evident in the kingdom’s preference for soft diplomatic methods to resolve regional issues peacefully, emphasizing dialogue and cooperation. Additionally, Morocco actively works to boost its influence across both the Atlantic and African continents, pursuing these efforts in a collaborative and harmonious way that highlights development, mutual understanding, and partnership.

With a thoughtful and nuanced strategy, Morocco is committed to protecting its national interests while fostering stability and peaceful coexistence in the surrounding regions. By balancing restraint with active engagement, Moroccan diplomacy aims to create meaningful relationships and establish itself as a responsible, influential player in the area—contributing to peace and stability throughout its neighborhood.

To sum up, as we look toward the start of 2026, Moroccan diplomacy stands on the brink of a crucial transition that calls for strategic repositioning in a rapidly changing world. It’s not just about shifting allegiance from one global power to another but about moving beyond dependence and stepping into a new chapter of relative independence in decision-making. Morocco’s goal is clear: to strengthen its role as a balanced, strategic player by blending political realism with economic practicality, all while safeguarding its core values, national unity, and diplomatic sovereignty.
