The border issue in southern Lebanon was never merely a dispute over land or geographic lines. Throughout history, it has been a continuous path of Israeli attempts to encroach on national sovereignty and carve out parts of Lebanese geography. In 2000, following the defeat of the occupation, the so-called “Blue Line” emerged, endorsed by the United Nations as a withdrawal line and a temporary indicator of the border. Although this line did not represent Lebanon’s official and historical international border, it formed a starting point for an Israeli policy based on repeated violations and the imposition of new facts on the ground by force, bypassing all international covenants.
The 2024–2025 Aggression and the “Yellow Line” Deception
With the outbreak of the Israeli aggression spanning 2024 and 2025, the occupation moved to a new phase of imposing facts on the ground. It drew a new line it called the “Yellow Line.” This line was nothing but a surgical strip through which the occupation cut off dozens of southern villages and agricultural lands, cementing direct occupation and working to erase the identity of the villages within it. The occupation drew this line after two years of systematic destruction, knowing that it entered the villages within this line after the announcement of the so-called ceasefire, in which the Lebanese side committed, while the occupation continued to advance, bulldoze, and demolish. Throughout this period, the occupation uprooted olive trees, bulldozed villages, and violated the sanctity of churches, mosques, and even cemeteries.
Massacres Outside the “Yellow Line”: Targeting Women and Children
Israeli attacks and massacres were not limited to the areas cut off within the so-called Yellow Strip, but expanded to include villages and towns outside it. Under flimsy pretexts repeated by the occupation claiming to target “infrastructure and military headquarters,” shelling struck homes and civilians in their villages. Field inspections and press reports confirmed that the targeted sites were inhabited residential buildings, where infants, women, and mothers were killed in their homes by the shelling. In the south, the last embrace of a mother for her infant was drawn at night in blood and rubble before the eyes of the world. This is nothing strange in the history of wars with the occupation, which is known to live on killing innocents and children. It is an entity that kills and does not fight.
Netanyahu’s Lie: Between “Decisiveness” in Ali Al-Taher and Targeting the Southern Depth
The occupation’s field contradiction was not limited to drawing imaginary lines, but was clearly manifested in the pretexts it used to launch raids targeting villages geographically outside the “Yellow Line.” The occupation claimed that these strikes came in response to the resistance launching booby-trapped drones targeting its forces operating in the Ali Al-Taher area. Here precisely, the hypocrisy and dual narrative of the occupation are exposed.
A few hours before these raids, Benjamin Netanyahu had declared that the “Ali Al-Taher” area no longer posed any danger to the occupation forces after imposing control over it. This stark contradiction raises a fundamental question: How can the occupation declare control and neutralize the danger from a site, then return to justify shelling villages and civilians with attacks originating from or heading to the same site?
This contradiction places Israeli behavior before only two interpretations: either the declaration of “control and decisiveness” was a false claim for internal marketing, or the narrative about the drones is merely a fabricated pretext to expand the circle of aggression and pressure on populated villages. In both cases, the primary goal of these strikes becomes clear: an attempt to leap over the lines of contact to direct blows at civilians, in order to create a pressure environment, cause a rift between the resistance and its social structure, and push the residents of these areas into forced displacement.
The Thorn of the “Gray Line”
In conclusion, these field and political sequences show that the harvest of the so-called “Lebanese-Israeli negotiations” has produced nothing but the “thorn of the gray line”: a hybrid, blurred space fabricated by the occupation to serve as cover for its violations and a fortress through which it evades any international obligations. The transition from the “Blue Line” to the cutting off of the “Yellow Line,” then leaping over both continuously through shelling and killing outside all lines, proves that political and military grayness was not a negotiating stalemate, but a calculated Israeli strategy designed exclusively to serve the occupation project. A grayness that allows it to continue destruction and bulldozing, cover the contradictions of its false narratives, and continue its war on people and stone under a negotiating umbrella emptied of content, providing Lebanon with nothing but further exhaustion, infringement on its sovereignty, and the killing of its people.
