Madagascar’s President Flees Country Amid Gen Z-Led Protests

Madagascar’s president has fled the country, as confirmed by the leader of the opposition and other officials. Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko stated that President Rajoelina left on Sunday after army units joined the protesters. His current location is unknown. The president’s office, which had announced a national address for Monday, did not comment on his departure. Reports say he escaped on a French military plane after making a deal with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Protests began on September 25 due to water and power shortages, quickly turning into a broader uprising against issues like corruption and poor governance. This discontent mirrors similar global protests targeting ruling elites. Rajoelina lost crucial support from the elite military unit, CAPSAT, which deflected to support the protesters and took control of the military. Protests gathered momentum, with many people in the capital demanding the president’s resignation.

The Senate announced the removal of the president and replaced him temporarily with a new leader, as the Senate president was also a target of public anger. Thousands continued to rally in the capital, expressing frustration over the government’s failure to address poverty. One protester shared his struggle to survive on a low salary while the ruling class has grown wealthy. Reports indicate that at least 22 people have died in conflicts since protests began. Madagascar, home to 30 million people, faces significant poverty, with a median age under 20. While best known for vanilla, its economy relies on exports like nickel, cobalt, textiles, and shrimp.
