Zelenskyy to Trump: If you have a plan to end the war, tell us now

If Donald Trump knows how to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, he shouldn’t wait until after November’s U.S. presidential election to spill the details, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday.

“I will have that war settled between Putin and Zelenskyy as president-elect before I take office as president on Jan. 20,” former President Trump said at last week’s televised face-off with incumbent Joe Biden. While the presumptive Republican nominee has not publicly divulged his plans for Ukraine, he has repeatedly said that ending the war would be one of his first tasks if he became America’s next president.

“If Trump knows how to end this war he should tell us today,” Zelenskyy said in an interview with Bloomberg TV. “Because if there are risks to Ukraine’s independence, if there are risks that we lose statehood, we want to be prepared for this.”

Zelenskyy said he wanted to understand whether after Nov. 5 — when Americans go to the polls — Ukraine would still have the powerful support of the U.S., or be left to fend for itself.

“They can’t plan my life and the life of our people, our children,” the Ukrainian president said. “My message is if they have the plan, it can be not public because of the elections but I think we have to know before to prepare.”

Trump said at last week’s debate with Biden that he doesn’t regard as acceptable Putin’s ultimatum that Ukraine surrender four of its regions to Russia to end the war.

He said, however, that he is mulling a deal whereby NATO commits to no further eastward expansion — specifically into Ukraine and Georgia — and negotiates with the Russian president over how much Ukrainian territory Moscow can keep, officials and advisors in contact with Trump told POLITICO.

Trump’s campaign office refused to comment.
