A month into Kurdish referendum on independence Kurdish Gorran Party says KRG president post should be abolished. Gorran Party believes that the formation of national salvation government is necessary amidst recent ‘setbacks’ following KRG President Barzani’s unilateral decision to carry out a referendum, despite international objections.
Going against international community advice to postpone referendum, Barzani has managed to successfully split Iraqi Kurds but strengthen central government in Baghdad. His miscalculation has resulted in the outcome he least wanted. Upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections in Spring 2018 are likely to lead to Barzani’s further loss of power and political relevance.
For Iraq and the region this is a positive development as it would prevent further conflict in already devastated country. Iraqi PM Abadi’s ongoing regional tour which started on Saturday in Riyadh is aimed at garnering political and financial support to push forward Prime Minister’s new vision for Iraq post-ISIS.
